If a drain becomes blocked, subsides or collapses, fixing the problem could cost a housing association thousands of pounds. It is possible to reduce the risks by putting a preventative maintenance plan in place – where drains are serviced on a regular basis – but it’s also important for tenants to follow some simple do’s and don’t’s.

In 2013, new European standards are due to be introduced to tighten the levels of lead permitted in the UK’s drinking water. With lead in tap water usually resulting from lead pipework, the optimum solution would be to replace the country’s pipes with plastic alternatives. However, as Roger Bulkeley from drainage specialist UKDN points out, this is likely to be a costly and time consuming exercise, so local authorities would be wise to start budgeting and planning their replacement programmes now.
